About the event
Ski Mountaineering & Backcountry Skiing
Have you wanted to go beyond resort skiing, beyond crowds, beyond your own limits? Are you curious what it takes to climb mountains (literal mountains), traverse snow, descend through rugged terrain and off-trail? Perhaps it all seems too advanced, and that someone like you could never do that.Â
Perhaps, you just need to hear it from someone not so far along the journey themselves, with fresh knowledge and insights into the sports of backcountry skiing and mountaineering.Â
Meet Monica. Monica is a self-proclaimed intermediate ski mountaineerer. She took the less known route by mountaineering first, and taking up backcountry skiing later. She is not a guide, nor a professional, but is still out there doing it. And ready to share with you. Monica is looking forward to sharing with you:
- Her journey into the sport and how to get started
- Ski/Mountaineering Equipment
- How she prepared/learned avalanche awareness
- Trip planning (what to pack, weather, navigation, avalanche conditions)
Bring your curiosity, your questions and additionally your openness to your own potential. We look forward to seeing you there.
The Women Outdoors Speaker Series
We were inspired by our existing members and partners to create a Series that gives women access to women in the outdoors. Through Gearhouse we are lucky enough to have a living network of women, from outdoor-aspiring to outdoor-accomplished. These events will bring us all together at Basecamp Café for a four week series that will educate, action and - by default - inspire you out of your seat and into the wilderness.    This event supports the continuation of Gearhouse and Basecamp Café as a community space.
Tickets for each event are $10 and each ticket gets you an entry to the raffle that will be held on the final night of the series.
This is an inclusive event, and all are invited to share in the woman’s outdoor experience, and the passion that the speakers and Gearhouse have for the outdoors and these respective activities.
5.30pm - Come and mingle and meet other outdoor-interested women and supporters
6.00pm - Hear from our speaker about their outdoor passion and knowledgeable advice
7.00pm - Q&A/Follow-up planning/chat/hang out
About Monica Pfister
Monica grew up in Alaska and moved to Seattle in 2016. She's passionate about all things outdoors, but her current interest is ski mountaineering. Monica has been mountaineering for approximately 5 years, but up until 2 seasons ago, she did not know how to ski. She watched for years as people flew past down mountains on their skis while she slogged through the snow, and decided that she needed to learn how to join them. Though she is relatively new to ski mountaineering, she has had the opportunity to spend the last 6 months funemployed and solely focused on the sport.
