About the event

Want to try backpacking but don't know where to start? Did you know that you can go backpacking on a bike?

We at Gearhouse want to get as many different kinds of people outside, so we’re running a series to teach you absolutely everything you’d need to know to get out into the backcountry. We'll talk how to pack a bike, gear, trail selection, weight (you don’t need to be ultralight to have a lighter pack!), food, safety: we will cover it all. At the end of this series, you’ll be confident in your skills to get you and your friends out on the trail, and we'll plan a trip (accompanied by a veteran bikepacker or two, of course) to put your knowledge to the test.

Part 1 of 4, 6/8: Backpacking Gear Basics

Part 2 of 4, 6/15: Food Basics

Part 3 of 4, 6/22: How to Pack a Bike and Bike Gear Basics

Part 4 of 4, 6/29: Trip Planning

The first two courses in this series will cover basic backpacking skills. The second two courses will cover planning and how to translate your backpacking skills to bikepacking. Backpacking and bikepacking are very similar, albeit using differing modes of transport, so if you already know how to backpack and just want to learn how to bikepack, we have a ticket option for you that only includes the final two classes.
